Two Data Stories of Scent

This interactive data visualization project presents two distinct narratives. 

1. Interactive Database Market on Scented Candles;  transforms global and Greater Toronto Area market research data on scented candles into an interactive web story. 

2. Data physicalization of essential oils; turns lesser-known facts about common essential oils into a fully immersive data installation that engages all five senses. 

These two data-driven stories explore how interactive and immersive techniques can elevate storytelling, making complex information both captivating and accessible.

 

The data visualization simplifies these insights, presenting store-specific data through an interactive map of scented candle retailers in the Greater Toronto Area, enhanced by an animated illumination effect to highlight key locations. Each dataset is visualized using vertical parallax scrolling, with soothing motion graphics and colors that reflect the calm, tranquility associated with scented candles.

A multi-sensory experience of data physicalization, this installation presents information about essential oils—covering fragrance types, origins, extraction methods, positions on the fragrance wheel and pyramid, and associated health benefits. The aim was to explore how people perceive and experience scent notes without knowing their names, and to uncover the ideas they associate with them. Another goal was to design an interactive installation that invites visitors to actively engage with the scents, offering a tactile and immersive way to connect with the data.
